Disability Law Center Anchorage (DLC) is one of the most significant, non-profit and independent organization that has basically come into existence with the purpose of providing legal sponsorship services to people with any kind of disability in any part of Alaska. The DLC has been designated under the federal law as the P & A (“Protection and Advocacy) agency of the state of Alaska. The P & A structure consists of the countrywide network of congressionally authorized disability rights firms based on a legal foundation. The Disability Law Center Anchorage (DLC) has set its basic objective as providing for the safety as well as the security and advocacy of the human, civil and legal rights of individuals having physical or mental disabilities.
The Disability Law Center Anchorage (DLC) has a unique and firm authority as inscribed in the federal law of enforcing both federal and state laws with reference to the benefits and special rights belonging to the individuals having disabilities. This unique authority involves many aspects such as initiation of investigations into cases of neglect and abuse in institutions, community programs or settings that are meant to serve persons with disabilities.
All the Protection and Advocacy agencies uphold their presence in facilities with the purpose of caring for persons with disabilities. Here they investigate, monitor, and endeavor to remedy unfavorable conditions that are being suffered by the individuals having disabilities. In addition to these functions, the Disability Law Center Anchorage (DLC) also has the only one of its kind authority of providing legal presentation along with other kinds of advocacy services falling under all the state as well as federal laws. These services are provided to all individuals with disabilities but being structured on the foundation of priorities in order to avail these services.
The Disability Law Center Anchorage (DLC) is committed to its objective of devoting all the required and substantial resources while ensuring complete access to all-encompassing educational and training programs, health care and medical assistance, financial entitlements, seeing to cases of bankruptcy, looking after requirements of accessible housing and making available creative employment opportunities.
The DLC besides having its agencies in Alaska also looks after the Canadian and Texas P&A agencies. With the DLC offices located in Anchorage, Bethel, Fairbanks and Juneau; they provide law based advocacy services to the community of people with disabilities throughout Alaska. The most important functions in order to be performed by the DLC agencies include the following:
- Responding to the complaints of neglect, abuse or refutation of rights filed by the people with disabilities; - Intervening and assisting individuals for advocating and fighting for their deserved rights; - Providing the persons with disabilities, training in self-advocacy; - Providing education and training including the learning of Internet based search to all the customers, delivery professionals, family members, the community and the constituency groups; - Providing legal representation to the persons with disabilities if their problems could not come to be resolved through the prescribed strategies; - Organizing workshops for teaching them the skills of marketing, branding, packing in order to make them self-employed along with distributing the required materials on special education, legal rights and other public benefits.
Apart from performing the above mentioned major functions, the Disability Law Center Anchorage also involves its agencies into other humanitarian and enlistment projects.
